Arlington – The Gallery at UTA is pleased to present an exhibition showcasing performance art by New York-based artist Huisi He, organized by UT Arlington Associate Professor Darryl Lauster. Her first solo exhibition in Texas, No Turning Back includes works dealing with He’s immigration experience and the surrounding politics of inclusion and exclusion, often as they relate to a woman’s body. Lauster, who teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Art and Art History, commented that he invited Ms. He to exhibit “because of the timeliness and poignancy of the issues embedded in her work” as well as “her interest in collaborating with UTA students while in residence.” The exhibition will consist of live performances, including the premiere of a new work which addresses the sociopolitical reality of surviving economically and politically as a Chinese immigrant living and working in New York, videos of other performances recorded during her week in Texas as a visiting artist, and video projections of previous works performed elsewhere. Scripts of performance works, props and other ephemera related to her past performances also will be shown as part of the exhibition.
Huisi He is a Chinese-born artist whose primary modes of artistic expression are performance, choreography, painting and video. Ms. He came to the United States in 2007 with a background in journalism and a desire for freedom of expression that led her to pursue a career in art. She attended Florida State University, where she received her MFA in visual art with an emphasis in performance in 2015. After completing her graduate degree, she moved to New York City to continue her art practice. Her response to moving to a new environment has been a recent theme as she seeks to illustrate through performance her internal struggle to balance her dreams with reality. In the short time since she graduated, Ms. He has performed at numerous locations throughout New York including at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Grace Exhibition Space, Panoply Performance Lab, Last Frontier NYC, Gallery Sensei and numerous public sites. In addition, she has recently shown her works internationally in Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and at the Danish Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark.
